Q: I have a 4 year-old child and only own a $250K life insurance policy, but do not only any real estate. Do I still need a trust?

A: Yes, a trust is highly recommended any time a minor child would be inheriting more than $5,000. This is because the Probate Code requires court petitions and ongoing judicial supervision any time minor inherits more than $5,000. The ONLY way to avoid the court intervention altogether is to create a trust and name the trust as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy!
